Portal | Display error that results from invalid Portal config
A. An Unexpected Error
Very occasionally you might come across a search record, or a page, that displays this unusual message at the bottom of the page:

Unfortunately, clicking the ‘Detailed error description’ provides little help. You will just receive a load of cryptic URLs.
B. Structure and Content
The problem may lie in the template used in the Portal Registry. Possibly due to developer error (when registering the Component), the portal template gets set to an invalid value. This can be seen when investigating the content reference in the Portal Structure and Content.
PeopleTools -> Portal -> Structure and Content

To fix the problem, change the template value to ‘Default Template’ (or another value that has been confirmed to work OK):
